Coldcut, "Autumn Leaves" (1993)

Of course autumn brings
A sense of melancholy.
Though, here, no leaves fall.

  • Love this one! Have never heard it. Is this the group that worked with Lisa Stansfield?

  • Oui. They did "People Hold On" with her, and also worked with Yazz on tracks like "The Only Way Is Up." But they've also been a fixture on the breaks and beats dance scene forever.

This cover of "Autumn Leaves" was a bit of a cult favorite in the dance community through the 90s -- in its original incarnation, but, even more, various chillout mixes of it (like the 10 minute "Irresistible Force mix," which has appeared on a lot of balearic, Cafe Del Mar type comps). It's not as if the 40s versions (by Nat King Cole or Duke Ellington) aren't great, but this arrangement -- especially when it changes when she sings the signature line, "but I miss you most of you my darling..." -- is just KILLER. Never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
